Fridays

Margot is with her papa on Fridays. Andy works four ten-hour days so she comes to work with me Monday through Thursday and, then, on Friday she is with him. On Fridays, I nurse her one last time in the morning, while she is still in her feeted jammies and then, with breast-pump in tow, I leave for the museum.

I am always so curious what they do and when I ask he always always says, We just hung out. If I am observant when I get home I discover that they read the sushi book or took Alice for a walk. I know he has her in the carrier most of the day. They paint together in his studio. He changes her diapers and feeds her my milk in a glass bottle. He takes a shower with her. Sometimes she is in the swing. I discover these things because Andy has never been the best at covering his tracks and the sweet evidence is everywhere--swing in the middle of the room, leash on the kitchen table, paint brushes by the sink, milk-stained bottles on the counter, sushi book in the rocking chair. When I get home she is almost always in the carrier with her big brown Andy eyes peering over the top.

I love that I have a man who looks forward to Fridays with his girl. I love seeing what he picks out for her to wear (she is never in matching socks and I find random socks all about the house). I love that they have a private day together every week and that what they do is their little secret.
